As a visual artist and educator, I bring a unique perspective that merges professional artistry with deep expertise in socio-emotional learning (SEL) and trauma-informed teaching practices. My education and approach reflect a holistic commitment to fostering creativity, emotional exploration, and community connection.

Artistic Journey and Contributions

My professional artistic career spans over two decades, during which I have:
  • Exhibited Works: Showcased art in galleries and exhibitions that explore themes of identity, culture, and social justice.
  • Performed Live Art: Engaged audiences through live painting and interactive art-making, emphasizing the transformative power of creative expression.
  • Artist Talks: Delivered compelling presentations that provide insight into artistic processes and cultural narratives.
Additionally, I mentor high school students in portfolio preparation and development, helping them craft cohesive and expressive bodies of work that reflect their authentic voices while meeting academic and professional standards.

Art Education Philosophy and Practice

With over 17 years of experience in art education, I design and implement curricula that:
  • Foster Creative Expression: Encouraging students to explore their imagination while mastering diverse media and art forms.
  • Promote Emotional Understanding: Integrating SEL principles, I guide students to explore and articulate emotions through art, supporting personal growth and resilience.
  • Celebrate Uniqueness: Empowering individuals to embrace and express their unique identities.
  • Build Community Connections: Facilitating collaborative projects that strengthen relationships and cultural understanding.
I also emphasize the use of secondary resources—historical, literary, or multimedia materials—to enhance lesson plans, providing richer context and deeper connections to the art-making process.

SEL and Trauma-Informed Expertise

As a Bartol Certified Trauma-Informed Teaching Artist (TIFTA), I create safe, inclusive environments where all learners can thrive. My approach prioritizes:
  • Recognizing the impact of trauma on learning and creative expression.
  • Providing tools for emotional regulation through art.
  • Cultivating a space that respects diversity and promotes healing-centered engagement.

Educational Impact

Through my combined roles as artist, educator, and mentor, I aim to inspire and equip students and communities to:
  • Discover their voices through art.
  • Build emotional resilience and self-awareness.
  • Engage in meaningful dialogue about culture, identity, and shared human experiences.
My work represents the powerful intersection of art, education, and healing, dedicated to fostering a more expressive, empathetic, and connected world.
